April is a time to recognize the strength and contributions of minority communities while also addressing the health challenges they face. National Minority Health Month is all about improving healthcare access and encouraging people to take charge of their well-being. During April 11-17, we also highlight Black Maternal Health Week, a time to honor Black mothers and advocate for the care and support they deserve.
Supporting Black Maternal Health
Black mothers play a vital role in their families and communities, yet they face higher risks during pregnancy and childbirth. According to the CDC, Black women are three times more likely to experience pregnancy-related complications than white women—not because of who they are, but because of healthcare barriers that need to change.
Black Maternal Health Week, started by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, is a chance to uplift Black mothers, listen to their stories, and work toward better maternal care. By supporting community efforts and advocating for better policies, we can create a world where every Black mother feels safe, supported, and valued.
Closing the Health Gap in Minority Communities
National Minority Health Month reminds us that quality healthcare should be available to everyone. This month encourages us to:
✅ Celebrate the strength and diversity of minority communities.
✅ Raise awareness about health issues that affect minorities, like heart disease, diabetes, and maternal health concerns.
✅ Promote healthier practices and improve access to preventive care and education.
