Baby Safety Month: Keeping our Little Ones Safe

September is Baby Safety Month—a great reminder to make sure your home, car, and routines are safe for your baby. Whether you’re a new parent, a grandparent, or part of a big family caring for a little one, safety is something we can all work on together.

Safe Sleep

The safest place for your baby to sleep is in a crib, bassinet, or play yard—on their back, with a firm mattress and fitted sheet.

  • No blankets, pillows, bumpers, or stuffed animals in the sleep area.
  • Keep baby in your room (but not in your bed) for the first 6 to 12 months.
  • Avoid overheating and dress baby in light layers.

Car Seat Safety

Car seats protect babies best when they’re installed and used the right way.

  • Pick the right seat for your baby’s size and age.
  • Keep your child rear-facing as long as the seat allows.
  • Have your car seat checked by a certified technician. Find one near you through NHTSA’s Car Seat Inspection Locator or reach out to the LifeClinic location nearest you for help finding a car seat inspection site.

General Baby Safety

A few quick changes can help keep curious little ones safe:

  • Use safety gates for stairs.
  • Keep small objects, cords, and hot drinks out of reach.
  • Anchor furniture and TVs to the wall.
  • Use outlet covers and lock cabinets.

Multigenerational Caregiving

When grandparents, siblings, and other family members help care for baby, make sure everyone knows today’s safety guidelines.

  • Share safe sleep and car seat tips.
  • Store medications and cleaners where baby can’t reach.
  • Keep everyone updated on feeding schedules, allergies, and emergency contacts.
